Glossary of AV terms

  1. Projector – A device that projects an image onto a surface using light.
  2. Screen – A flat surface used to display images from a projector.
  3. Sound system – A set of speakers, amplifiers, and other equipment used to produce sound.
  4. Microphone – A device used to capture sound and transmit it to a sound system.
  5. Mixing desk – A device used to adjust the levels and quality of sound signals before they are amplified.
  6. Lighting system – A set of lights used to illuminate a stage or room.
  7. Stage – A raised platform used for performances or presentations.
  8. Lectern – A stand used to hold notes or a microphone for a speaker.
  9. Cables – Wires used to connect AV equipment to each other.
  10. Laptop – A portable computer often used to control AV equipment or display presentations.
  11. DVD player – A device used to play DVDs or CDs.
  12. Video switcher – A device used to switch between multiple video sources.
  13. Wireless system – A system that allows for the transmission of audio or video signals without the use of cables.
  14. Drape – Fabric used to cover walls or create a backdrop for a stage or presentation.
  15. Power distribution – Equipment used to distribute power to AV equipment.
